AKIM GAGNON: In Search of Meaning and Light

Akim Gagnon is a Quebecois writer known for his daring style, firmly anchored in the human experience. Shaped by a challenging childhood and an ongoing search for meaning, his writing is infused with deep emotions and the natural world. In this conversation, he opens up about his path, his influences, and his evolving approach to writing, which he views as a journey of introspection.

Akim Gagnon’s upbringing was one where love and challenges were closely intertwined. When reflecting on his youth, he speaks candidly, blending humor and thoughtful introspection: “My youth was like a rollercoaster filled with love, discomfort, powerful experiences, laughter, and impactful people.” He adds that what stands out most to him is the patience and love shown by the adults who shaped his worldview. "I truly understood this once I crossed into my thirties, and had both feet firmly planted in adulthood."

For him, the past is not a weight to shed, but rather a foundational period and the raw material for his creative journey. “Life becomes clearer once you can differentiate between the two tracks—the youth life and the adult life.” This shift in perspective has led him to embrace the idea of not running away from his past, but rather using it as the groundwork to forge his future.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Akim Gagnon found solace in writing. “Writing is about hope. And about believing in something greater,” he reflects. It was only during the pandemic that he fully embraced writing, realizing it gave his days meaning and opened a new path toward self-connection.

His approach to writing has undergone a significant shift. What began as a quest for attention and provocation gradually gave way to a more subtle, nuanced and introspective exploration. “I accepted, albeit late, that I have a profound capacity for awe.” This newfound wonder now feeds his creative process—his desire to uncover beauty in even the smallest, most ordinary things. His search for light,  often tinged with bittersweetness, emerges from quiet reflection, and is conveyed through his incisive humor that deepens and lightens his work at the same time.

The Natural Paradoxes

Nature holds a complex place in Akim Gagnon’s world. At times it offers comfort, while at other moments it feels overpowering. It serves as both a beacon of light that guides the way, yet also reflects our shadows “I love it, I hate it. Like everything,” he says, both captivated and daunted by this raw, unchanging force. To him, nature serves as a space of reflection, a terrain on which to pause and probe humanity’s contradictions, its beauty, and its dramas.

Yet, beyond this ambivalence, he finds in nature a wealth of emotions and images that feed his writing. “In the heart of nature, I often have this thought, thinking ‘I don’t belong here,’” he admits, suggesting that sitting in its midst, he feels both insignificant and, paradoxically, part of something much greater than himself.

The Retreat

During his time at BESIDE Habitat, Akim Gagnon sought to reconnect with himself, to escape the clamor of the outside world, and to face his own reflection. It provided him with the perfect opportunity to let writing unfold in a different environment, to embrace quietude, and to tune into the rhythms of nature.

He speaks of the place with sincere emotion. “As night falls, the windows turn into mirrors. It was a bit intimidating, I quickly figured out that by going to bed early, nature’s show would return much faster.”  This change in pace, freed from obligations and distractions, allowed him to focus on what truly mattered: his well-being, his creative process, and the passing moment. “I also spent a lot of time in the sauna. Let’s be real, there’s something about being naked, out of sight, and concentrating on nothing but your own happiness that is truly soothing.”

Akim Gagnon is an author constantly seeking new understandings. His writing offers a glimpse into his own contradictions, a quest for meaning that draws from both the intimate and the universal. Through his perspective on the trials of childhood, his complex relationship with nature, and writing as an act of resistance and light, he calls on readers to reflect, to dream, to marvel, and above all, to reconnect with their essence.
