"I was literally born with a pencil in my hand, and I’ve never let go of it," says Felipe Arriagada-Nunez, also known as Chien Champion. The Montreal-based illustrator and visual artist is known for his colorful, vibrant universe, deeply rooted in urban culture.

The Chilean-born artist grew up in the heart of Mile-End, in an apartment adorned with walls covered in artwork and filled with music from morning to night. The pencil placed in his hand as a child would go on to shape the course of his life.

"I spent most of my childhood drawing, playing soccer, hockey, skateboarding, watching cartoons, and wandering the streets of Mile-End and Plateau Mont-Royal," he recalls.

To this day, he draws inspiration from the vibrant streets he roams, from music, cinema, and the encounters he has in the neighborhood. His distinctive style transforms everyday life and ordinary details into scenes brimming with color and humanity.

"I want my projects to resonate with people and tell a story. And to be able to relate a story in the most authentic way possible, you have to stay curious and attentive."

Felipe's imagination is deeply rooted in his annual trips to Chile with his parents. In the yellow, orange and pink buildings, in the lively streets or in the family gatherings filled with music and laughter.

Although he appreciates the simple beauty of nature, he admits he has always felt at home in the city. His stay at BESIDE Habitat had a clear purpose: to spend quality time with his family and girlfriend. "I was happy to invite my parents to a cabin. We had great conversations, ate well, and I found inspiration from the setting."

For Chien Champion, happiness lies somewhere in human interactions and the chaos of the city. His encounters are deeply ingrained in his artistic process; for every project, he strives to capture the stories of the people who inspire him and translate them into poetic images that bring us back to our own essence.

"Humanity is at the heart of my work. I always carry my notebook with me to sketch people who stand out or leave an impression on me. Thank you, peeps!"

Despite his evident love for the hustle and bustle of urban life, the artist admits to appreciating the benefits of spending time in nature and taking in a good breath of fresh air. As long as he's got his pencils and music resonates between the wooden walls, he has no trouble!

CHIEN CHAMPION'S CULTURAL RECOMMENDATION
The series about DJ Mehdi: Made in France on Arte. It's the story of a Parisian music/dj producer who managed to build bridges between the hip hop movement of the 90s-2000s (113, Ideal J) and the French touch movement (daft punk, justice). It's super inspiring, touching and enriching
