"I was literally born with a pencil in my hand, and I’ve never let go of it," says Felipe Arriagada-Nunez, also known as Chien Champion. The Montreal-based illustrator and visual artist is known for his colorful, vibrant universe, deeply rooted in urban culture.
The Chilean-born artist grew up in the heart of Mile-End, in an apartment adorned with walls covered in artwork and filled with music from morning to night. The pencil placed in his hand as a child would go on to shape the course of his life.
"I spent most of my childhood drawing, playing soccer, hockey, skateboarding, watching cartoons, and wandering the streets of Mile-End and Plateau Mont-Royal," he recalls.
To this day, he draws inspiration from the vibrant streets he roams, from music, cinema, and the encounters he has in the neighborhood. His distinctive style transforms everyday life and ordinary details into scenes brimming with color and humanity.
"I want my projects to resonate with people and tell a story. And to be able to relate a story in the most authentic way possible, you have to stay curious and attentive."
Felipe's imagination is deeply rooted in his annual trips to Chile with his parents. In the yellow, orange and pink buildings, in the lively streets or in the family gatherings filled with music and laughter.
